The wedge-shaped meadow

Järfälla means “the wedge-shaped meadow”. The name comes from the shape of the farm property that was located next to Järfälla church about a thousand years ago. The name is still applicable since the municipality is shaped like a wedge, broader in the south and narrower in the north. Järfälla also offers plenty of unspoiled green open spaces, just like a meadow.

Järfälla is located twelve miles northwest of Stockholm. Its closest neighbours are the municipalities of Upplands-Bro, Upplands Väsby, Stockholm, Sollentuna and Ekerö. The border to Ekerö cuts through Lake Mälaren. Järfälla is divided into four local districts: Barkarby-Skälby, Jakobsberg, Viksjö and Kallhäll-Stäket. Each district has its own centre.

Järfälla has a lot to offer: good public service and transport, a flourishing business community, a wide range of recreational and cultural activities and beautiful scenery with Lake Mälaren on its doorstep.

The municipality has good transportation. Three commuter train stations – Barkarby, Jakobsberg and Kallhäll – transport commuters to Stockholm City in only 20 minutes. Bus service is available in all areas of the municipality as well as bus services to the surrounding municipalities. In Järfälla, practically everything is within easy reach. The European Highway E18 runs through the municipality and Järfälla is also close to the Arlanda and Bromma airports.
